100 years ago, 1914
July first brought the usual rush of visitors to Ricker Hill at Poland Spring, all eager to breathe the air of the elevated hill country of Maine, to enjoy the facilities for sport by means of which Hiram Ricker & Sons entertain their guests, and to drink the matchless Poland Spring water at its source. This year, in spite of the depression at other resorts, Poland Spring is exceeding the expectations of those interested in its success, and the summer of 1914 bids fair to be an exceptional season.

50 years ago, 1964
The annual Fourth of July activities to take place at the Lewiston Fairgrounds will get underway Saturday at 6 p.m. It will begin with a variety of races for boys and girls of different age groups. There will be foot races, bicycle races, bag races and three-legged races. About 6:30 the Montagnard Club Band will begin presenting musical selections while various dance contests will be staged at intermissions. Competition will be on the twist, waltz, rhumba and a few others. About 9 o’clock the Montagnard Club Band will play appropriate patriotic selections for the holiday observance and the Pine Tree Warriors Drum and Bugle Corps will present an exhibition. A big display of fireworks has been purchased by the city and the colorful aerial display will be shot off as soon as its dark enough. This year’s display is strictly an aerial show so that it will be visible even to spectators watching from nearby vantage points.

25 years ago, 1989
The first step toward construction of a new connector road between the Maine Turnpike and South Lewiston Industrial Park will get under way Wednesday when the Maine Department of Transportation opens the project for bids. The connector is designed to provide free traffic movement between Lisbon Street and the South Lewiston Industrial Park area, as well as access to and from the Maine Turnpike. The toll booth at the junction of the northbound and southbound ramps will be removed and will be replaced by a barrier system.
