UU reviving ringing tradition

AUBURN — The First Universalist Church of Auburn will ring its bells at noon Friday, July 4, to revive a 50-year-old tradition started by President John F. Kennedy. Usher John Davison will perform this ritual on behalf of the church.

The impetus came from the First Church of Weymouth, in Massachusetts, where the father of Abigail Adams was minister. Their deacon is hoping to make some historic noise this Fourth of July by ringing the bells 13 times – once for each original colony – to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Auburn UU will join this historic effort.

Any local churches, town offices, fire departments, civic organizations, and local businesses — even boats — are welcome to participate.

The church is at 169 Pleasant St. For more information, see www.auburnuu.org or call 783-0461.

This year’s choice of pies includes homemade cherry, blueberry, raspberry, custard, chocolate cream, banana cream, strawberry, lemon meringue, key lime and more. Visitors typically have a hard time choosing one kind and often buy two slices or slices to go. Visitors should come early for the best selection.

The homemade pies have become a favorite part of the Norway Art Festival and proceeds from the fundraiser help support the operational costs of the society. The Norway Historical Society is at 471 Main St.
