1923 – 2014

AUBURN — Herbert W. Cornish, 90, of Lisbon Falls passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn with his loving family and the exceptional staff by his side.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1923, to Harry and Gladys Cornish of Bowdoin Center. He attended grammar school in Bowdoin Center and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1942.

He was a Word War II veteran. He went into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943 and retired as a corporal in 1946. After retiring from the service, he worked as a garage mechanic for three years and at the Veterans’ Administration in Togus for five years, where he met his wife, Elizabeth Miller from Togus. He married Elizabeth in 1948 and had two daughters and a son. He retired from Pejepscot Paper in 1986 after 32 years of service. They lived in Durham for 46 years before moving to Lisbon Falls in 2000.

He belonged to the Sagadahoc Grange in Bowdoin. He loved deer hunting, flying, going for an airboat ride in the Everglades of Florida, going to the car auctions and selling at the flea market in Lisbon, which he did for more than 40 years.

He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth; two children, Bill Cornish and his wife, Sandra, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Andrea Cornish and her boyfriend, Mike, from Lisbon Falls; son-in-law, Archie Merrill; four grandsons, Paul Merrill and his fiance, Liz, Jerry and his girlfriend, Cari, Kevin and his wife, Christina, and Beau Cornish; two granddaughters, Amber Soucy and Laurie Belanger and her husband, Roland; and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Cornish, and a daughter, Barbara Merrill.
