Nova Star Cruises announced that its voyage from Portland to Yarmouth on July 4 would be canceled due to the weather. The voyage from Yarmouth to Portland on July 5 has also been canceled.
Independence Day live harness racing at Hollywood Casino was also canceled, according to a prepared statement released Friday afternoon. The next live harness race at Hollywood Casino is scheduled for Monday, July 7, at 5 p.m.
The city of Augusta joined many other communities across the state by canceling its Fourth of July parade, according to a dispatcher from the city’s police department.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for much of southern Maine, the midcoast region and Penobscot County on Friday. The weather service issued a high wind warning for Hancock and Washington Counties and a high surf advisory from Schoodic Point to Eastport.
The advisory stated that the region could see surf between nine and 12 feet, along with dangerous rip currents and urged people to stay away from rocks along the coast.
The storm hit the coast of North Carolina on Thursday night and is expected to reach waters off Maine’s coast Friday night.
Portland announced Thursday that its fireworks would be postponed to Saturday, July 5. Augusta’s fireworks display was postponed until August 2. Camden, Machias and Eastport also canceled their fireworks.
Passengers affected by the Nova Star cancellation were notified by email and can change their reservations to any available date in the future, a press release stated. They can also cancel their reservations without penalty by calling 866-864-6295.
Bangor announced early Friday evening that the 9:30 p.m. fireworks show was on as scheduled.
Bangor’s parade started in Brewer at 11 a.m. and wrapped up in downtown Bangor at 1 p.m.
Jackman called off its fireworks for Friday, postponing the show until Saturday night. The parade is still scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Friday.
