POLAND — A local man was seriously injured Sunday when he was stabbed in a fight with his nephew, who was arrested after a chase into Cumberland County.

The nephew, Phillip Audet, 29, of Poland was charged Sunday evening with elevated aggravated assault and violating conditions of release. He is on probation after being convicted in Massachusetts for threatening a family member with a knife, the Androsoggin County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday night.

His uncle, Steven Narbonne, underwent emergency surgery for knife wounds after Sunday morning’s incident.

According to a release from Lt. Glenn Holt of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, Audet had been staying with his uncle, Narbonne, 49, at Narbonne’s 197 Torey Road residence.

The release said the two got into an altercation early Sunday morning, and Narbonne suffered two stab wounds from a butcher knife.

Narbonne walked to a neighbor’s home where he was unable to awaken anyone. A member of the neighbors’ family came home at around 1:30 a.m. and found Narbonne collapsed there.

Holt said help was immediately summoned, and Poland Rescue and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department responded.

Narbonne was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was recovering Sunday afternoon.

After the stabbing, Audet fled in his uncle’s vehicle, abandoning it at mile 71½ southbound on Interstate 95, Holt’s report stated.

Audet ran into the woods, pursued by Portland police, who used dogs to find him. He was then taken to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, where he was questioned by investigators.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit assisted the Androscoggin County sheriff’s investigators at the scene in Poland. The Auburn Police Department also assisted with a police dog.

Holt said the incident remains under investigation.
