FRYEBURG — Police said a local man was charged Monday with breaking into a convenience store, stealing alcohol and refusing to submit to arrest.

According to acting police Chief Joshua Potvin, 20-year old Cameron C. Henry was arrested and charged with one count of felony burglary and misdemeanor charges of theft, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest. He was also charged with possession of alcohol by a minor, a civil infraction.

Potvin said police were called to the Jockey Cap Store at 116 Bridgton Road around 3:13 a.m. to investigate a tripped security alarm. An officer reportedly found the store burglarized and the suspect preparing to flee on foot.

A shout to stop was ignored by the suspect, who fled across Route 302 and dropped a bottle of alcohol. In the ensuing chase, the suspect ran to Henry’s residence at 105 Bridgton Road, but was locked out. Police pepper-sprayed him, but he continued to elude capture by running down an access road to Lovewell Pond Road and past the town office, according to the chief.

Police eventually caught the suspect near Pine Street, where he allegedly became combative with an officer and a second burst of spray was applied. Officers from Bridgton Police Department and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist, Potvin said.

“It’s not often that we catch burglars during the commission of their crime. I am pleased that we are able to hold the offender accountable for his crimes,” the chief said.

The items stolen from the store, including bottles of Jack Daniels whiskey, Pinnacle-brand vodka and beef jerky, were recovered.

“Mr. Henry made entry into the store by kicking in a back door. The store was ransacked and food and alcohol were taken. The office door was also forced open and ransacked,” Potvin said.

Henry is being held on $5,000 cash bail at the Oxford County Jail on the charges related to the burglary and $880 cash on a previous warrant of arrest for failing to appear on an OUI charge from Fryeburg Police.

Potvin said the investigation is continuing.
