HOWLAND — Police say a Maine man died when his van struck a moose on Interstate-95 in Howland.
The crash took place at 1 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lane at mile marker 222, about 30 miles north of Bangor. Police say 60-year-old Sidney Oakes of Brewer was driving alone and died at the scene.
State police ask drivers to use caution driving at night because moose can be difficult to see due to their dark coloring. There are more than 500 moose-vehicle collisions every year in Maine. Tuesday’s fatality was the first fatal moose crash since 2012.
