CHESTERVILLE — An afternoon of reminiscing about day-to-day life in the 1940s in Franklin County will be co-hosted by the Chesterville Heritage Society and The Chesterville Center Meeting House, Inc. on Sunday, July 13 at 2:30 p.m.

Marin Whittier, 96, will share her 1944 diary entries and photograph album in the form of a narrated slide show about which she will answer questions and provide details.

The talk will be at the historic Chesterville Center Meeting House, which the nonprofit Chesterville Center Union Meeting House, Inc. is promoting for use by the community for arts and cultural events. The Chesterville Heritage Society has worked with Whittier to preserve her remarkable records and photos.

Whittier was born Marin Mason in Farmington Falls, and moved to New Sharon upon being married to Kenneth Whittier. The couple maintained a winter logging camp on the Ridge Road just over the Chesterville border in Fayette, later moving to Chesterville at Farmington Falls where they operated a fish store for many years.

Whittier’s diary reflects the rhythm of life in a less complicated era, and her many photos evoke a sense of the simple pleasures intrinsic to life in Franklin County when it was just on the cusp of modernity.

The talk will be at 2:30 at the Meeting House, which is at the corner of Zion’s Hill and Borough Roads. The talk is free; refreshments will be served; donations for the very lean organizations behind this event would be gratefully received at the door.
