RUMFORD — The Rumford Village Improvement Society is hosting its annual sale July 18 and 19 at the Rumford Center Meeting House, member Winona Barker said Wednesday afternoon.

Barker said she has been involved with the society for “around 30 years.”

“The VIS exists to help keep the Rumford Center Meeting House in working shape,” she said. “Every year, we have a project that we choose to work on. The town helps us, but we do fundraising to help pay for the rest. One year, we fixed up the doors in the building. Another year, we did all of the windows.”

The society’s next project is to put new siding on the front of the Rumford Center Meeting House, Barker said.

“This sale helps us accomplish these tasks,” she said.

Among the items for sale are furniture, clothing, kitchenware, books, games, toys and tools.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 18, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19.

People are welcome to drop off items between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays from now until July 18 at the Rumford Center Meeting House.

“We accept everything except for mattresses and large appliances,” Barker said. “In fact, we have a sign set up in front of the building that says, ‘Clean out your house, donate today!’ Anything that we don’t sell goes straight to the What Not Shop in Rumford.”

In addition to raising money for renovations to the Meeting House, Barker said the society puts aside part of the money for a scholarship.

“We award a scholarship, called the Gerta and Mel Preble Scholarship, to a student from the Rumford Center region who participates in athletics and who is attending college,” she said. “This year, we’re awarding the scholarship to a girl who plays tennis.”
