DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for the invaluable service you provide to all of us in the Sun Journal area. Thanks also to all the caring people who answered the appeal by the Waterford Grange for craft materials. The response is truly heartwarming.

Our Grange members have been busy knitting, crocheting and sewing. Some of these materials went into items that will be a part of the Grange exhibits in North Waterford, Oxford County and Fryeburg fairs.

In addition, we will have a combined craft, baked goods and yard sale Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout July and August. These will take place at our Grange Hall located next to the North Waterford Post Office on Route 35 in North Waterford.

More items will be added each week. Both craft materials and items for our yard sale will be gratefully accepted. Proceeds will go toward needed repairs for our historic building and will enable us to continue to contribute to local charities. Stop by and check us out. Thank you so much. — Mary DeLorenzo, master, and Sharon McAllister, Waterford Grange 479

DEAR SUN SPOTS: It would be a great service to readers to bring up the fact that people in the area are starting to get phone calls saying their computer is infected and they need to give the person calling access to their computer so they can fix it.

I fix computers part time, and several of these people have called me stating they have received such a call. These people did not give them access to their computer. However, the caller did get quite forceful with them before they just hung up on the caller.

Once they are in the computer, they infect it completely and then ask you to pay them by credit card to fix it. They not only completely messed up your computer, they are then going to use or sell your credit card number to someone else to use.

If you get one of these calls, don’t feel you have to be polite. Just hang up the phone. Being polite to a robber isn’t going to make him or her any less of a robber. — David Bergeron, davidb2@myottmail.com

ANSWER: Readers may also come across a situation where a window pops up while you are on a website that tells you your computer is infected and you need to run a test to check it. Don’t do it! Clicking that link is what will infect your computer with the kinds of virus David is writing about.

Often when things go wrong while working on a computer, the first instinct is to quick figure out what is wrong and start clicking this and that. Don’t. Instead take a deep breath and think about the situation. Letting the computer sit while you puzzle out what to do won’t make things worse. Indeed, that breather may save you from an even worse situation.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wanted to let you know that Goin’ Postal (July 7) has moved across the street to 9 North River Road, Auburn. They are basically behind the Cumberland Farms on Center Street now. Could you please update your Rolodex? Thanks. — Scott via email

ANSWER: Done!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding birdhouses made from old license plates (June 30), I have been making them for years. — R. E. Garnett, Lisbon Falls, regcodad@aol.com, 207-577-0166
