1946 – 2014
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Barry E. Gordon, 67, of Charlottesville, Va., died peacefully at home on Monday, July 7.
He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 27, 1946, to Lester and Ilene Gordon. His early interest in art was influenced by his father’s career as an artist and owner of an arts supply shop. Yet Barry was inclined to emulate the lives and works of the old masters in his profession.
He earned his living as an artist throughout his life, painting, drawing and doing portraits and commissions.
The course of his education was reflective of Renaissance thinking. He majored in mathematics and art at Brandeis University from 1965 until 1969, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rochester, with a master’s in business administration.
From 1972 to 1974, he earned a master’s in mathematics at Yale University, followed by a master of fine arts degree at the University of Maryland in 1979.
Barry lived in many places, regularly visiting galleries and studios to further his studies and practice: in Washington, D.C.; as an artist-in-residence with the Foundation Karolyi in Vence, France; in London; in Paris; and in Chapel Hill, N.C. He moved to Charlottesville, Va., in 2000.
While he preferred to independently sell his works to clients, Barry’s art was exhibited in select local venues as well as Saturday markets in Charlottesville and Nelson County. His work is currently on display at Les Yeux du Monde Gallery.
Barry is survived by his brother, Jim Gordon, of Boca Raton, Fla., and sister-in-law, Judy; a nephew, Daniel Gordon, of Washington, D.C., and his wife, Lilah, and their three children; and many friends and clients across the country.
While his conversation and authenticity will be greatly missed, he leaves as his legacy a body of work that represents the time, effort and talent of an old master in a modern age.
