1923 – 2014

AUGUSTA — Doris Gertrude Fortin, 90, died Friday, July 18, at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, after an extended illness.

She was born in Auburn on Dec. 22, 1923, a daughter of the late Alfred Jean and Leontine (Lachance) Jean. Doris attended Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1941. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Pineland Lumber Co. in Lewiston for three years. She married Clement E. Fortin on March 21, 1944.

Doris worked in the office of Station Hospital at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif., while Clement was stationed in California. When they moved back to Maine, she was in charge of the laboratory at H.P. Hood and Sons in Auburn for three years. In the 1960s, she worked for the Oblate Fathers doing bookkeeping. She was also in charge of the Oblate Book Store and Gift Shop. She was also the bookkeeper for the businesses owned by both herself and her husband for 38 years, Anita and Annette’s Beauty Salon for 24 years, Central Beauty School for 24 years and Stylist Supply for 14 years.

Doris was a communicant of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Augusta for 41 years. She was active in the church choir, volunteered as a money counter and was active in the Cursillistas in the Cursillo Movement.

For 2½ years, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in North Windham. She was currently a communicant of St. Michael Parish in Augusta.

Surviving is a son, Daniel J. Fortin and his wife, Jo-Ann, of Augusta; three grandchildren, Michael Fortin of Anchorage, Alaska, Timothy Fortin and his wife, Tara, of Palmer, Alaska, and Megan (Fortin) Berman and her husband, Brian, of Belfast; five great-grandchildren, Bradley, Austin, Skyla and Alexis Fortin, children of the late David Fortin, Jr., and Isabella Fortin, daughter of Timothy and Tara Fortin; one sister, Jeannette Larochelle, of Bangor; and nieces and nephews, Richard and Raymond Larochelle, Pauline (Larochelle) Sardo and Theresa (Jean) Inman.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, Clement, who died on Dec. 29, 2008; two daughters, Anita and Annette, who died of accidental drowning in March 1952; a son, David R. Fortin Sr., who died on June 28, 2006; grandson, David R. Fortin Jr., who died on Feb. 13, 2009; and a brother, Robert Jean, who died in 1994.
