AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine panel of bipartisan legislative leaders is considering a plan to transform the old copper sheath of the Statehouse dome into art.

The Legislative Council is mulling a proposal from the Maine Arts Commission to sell pieces of copper being removed from the dome to jewelers and artisans to create artwork. The proposal also calls for some of the copper to be used to create commemorative artifacts.

Some of the 7,000-square feet of metal covering the dome would be sold to sculptors or schools and others would be used to create artwork for the Capitol complex.

Workers are about one-third of the way done with replacing the 100-year-old copper sheath. The council is likely to vote on the proposal next month.
