CONNOR — A Caribou man faces multiple charges after taking a car without the owner’s permission and crashing it next to the Madawaska River on Saturday night, according to Sgt. Brian Harris of the Maine State Police.
Harris said Sunday morning that Jacob Lavoie, 19, was traveling in a 2004 Volvo at 11 p.m. Saturday on Dubay Pit Road in Connor when he lost control going around a corner. The sergeant noted that the vehicle went to the opposite side of the road into a ditch, struck several trees and rolled on its side before it ultimately came to a stop against a tree on the bank of the Madawaska River.
Lavoie, who Harris said allegedly did not have permission to use the car, fled the scene. The car had significant damage, the sergeant added.
Lavoie later turned himself in at the Caribou Police Department, where he was charged with operating after suspension, leaving the scene of an accident and unauthorized use of property, Harris said.
Lavoie did suffer minor injuries in the crash but did not require treatment, according to the sergeant.
Trooper Andrew Levesque investigated the accident and was assisted at the scene by officers with the Aroostook Sheriff’s Office, United States Border Patrol and Caribou Fire and Ambulance.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection also responded because of the vehicle’s proximity to the river.
