1924 – 2014

POMPANO BEACH, Fla.— Allan Royce Wood, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and formerly of Beech Hill Road in Auburn, passed away on Friday, July 25, at Imperial Hospital in Pompano Beach. He was 89.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1924, in Belfast, the son of Louville and Avis Wood. He grew up in Waterville. Upon his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving through World War II. He was honorably discharged and spent the next five years in Juneau, Alaska.

He then returned to Maine and married Joan Merrill of Augusta in 1953.

Allan worked for many years in different capacities for Sampson Super Markets, taking him to senior vice president. In 1966, Sampson merged with Hannaford Brothers and he continued to work until his retirement in 1986.

During his retirement, he enjoyed many years of traveling, golfing, gardening, hiking, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

Allan is survived by his longtime companion, Susan Jacques, of Vassalboro; his son, John, of Kennebunkport; daughter-in-law, Debra; two grandchildren, Derek Wood of Los Angeles, Calif., and Andrea Wood of Westbrook; his sister, Geraldine Jose, of Unity; stepsisters, Sandra Upham, Melinda Sherburne, Janice Sherburne, Jeanne Searles, Marjory Cormier, Mary Labbe and Maureen Brown; and his stepbrother, Alfred Wood.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan; and sons, Tim and Jeff.
