For years Daniel G. Hall, who died in Auburn in 1893, was recognized locally as the pioneer jeweler but it is doubtful if any ever identified him with the practice of dentistry. A few days ago Arthur B. Hall and Charles F. Hall, sons of D. G. Hall and like their father engaged in the jewelry business in Auburn, were presented with a sign done in gilt, which reads, “D. G. Hall, Surgeon-Dentist.” It had been found by one of the father’s brothers, R. G. Hall of Gray in the attic of an old house in Gray and forwarded to them. “It is the first time we ever saw it,” say the Hall “boys” — for tho the two are well past middle age they are still referred to as such. The brothers agree that the sign must be nearly 80 years old.

When developer Lawrence Pride revealed his plans this week for an $18 million renovation of the W.S. Libbey mill, including its on-site opera house, many thought he was referring to the nearby Empire Theatre. But Pride meant exactly what he said. Tucked directly behind the Empire is a brick Greek-revival style building that once seated as many as 300 people. Now, if his plan receives official approval and financing, that opera house will be restored as a meeting center, Pride says. The opera house — most likely known about 1890 as the Parlor Theatre on Island Garden Avenue — was not built as part of the complex, but was purchased by W.S. Libbey at some point, according to current mill owner Armand Favreau, who bought the mill from the Libbey family two years ago.
