I write in response to Kay Hamlin’s letter titled “Better use for the money,” (July 15).
She voiced her opinion regarding fireworks. She finds that they disrupt her peace and quiet and stated that the money spent on them would be more useful spent on other things, like food.
I would like to voice my opinion on this matter. I feel that fireworks displays during independence week should be given a break.
Many people go to camp to enjoy peace and quiet, and many others go for vacation to have a good time. A popular time for vacations coincidentally falls around Independence Day. This should be a time to celebrate our country and all that it stands for to be an American.
What might be considered noise pollution by some would be called a celebration of our freedom by others. This is how some show their love for their country.
I realize that this money can be used for other things, but I feel like that is the choice of the person purchasing the fireworks. It is one of our freedoms as Americans.
One should not judge others without knowledge of their situation. Some people purchase fireworks a little at a time, or save all year.
I think fireworks displays during the week of Independence Day should be granted leniency. If it becomes excessive, then maybe people should contact local authorities or town councilmen and petition for a new ordinance or law.
