WALDOBORO — One of two teenage boys on bicycles struck by a truck Friday night has died.

Tyler Wood, 15, died shortly before noon Saturday at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was taken Friday night by a LifeFlight helicopter, according to Waldoboro Police Chief William Labombarde.

The second teen, Antonio Seccareccio, 14, of Waldoboro suffered a leg injury and was taken to the Miles campus of Lincoln County Healthcare in Damariscotta before being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was listed in satisfactory condition Monday morning at Maine Medical Center.

Witnesses told police that the two boys were stopped in the southbound travel lane in the area of 603 Union Road talking to two pedestrians when the accident happened at about 8:20 p.m.

The driver of the 2001 Mitsubishi refrigerated box truck, 24-year-old Joseph E. Benedix of Waldoboro, told police he didn’t see the boys in the road until he was almost upon them.

He said he tried to swerve around the bikes but struck the bike closest to the center line. The 15-year-old was thrown from his bicycle and landed on the shoulder of the road, police reported. His bicycle is believed to have struck the second cyclist.

The truck was registered to Simmons Lobster Wharf Inc. of Friendship.

The chief said alcohol is not considered an issue with the driver although he was tested, which is a standard practice when a crash may be a fatal.
