NORWAY — The friends and members of the Second Congregational Church, U.C.C., on Main Street, are busy sorting, cleaning and pricing items for their 15th annual Tent-N-Treasures Yard Sale, which will be held, Saturday, Aug. 23.
Bruce Davison, yard sale coordinator, said, “We look forward to a very large crowd. If you haven’t been before, don’t miss it. We have something for everyone; from books to baby stuff, a canoe and wood chipper, sinks to sofas, and tools to trinkets. All items are reasonably priced, clean and in working order. New this year, the church received the generous donation of a local estate. Many pieces of furniture, linens, antiques, lovely glassware and dishes will be located in a special ‘Estate’ tent. Local artist Don Gouin is returning with his birch and alder furniture, frames and Western Maine photographs. We will also have fresh produce, baked beans and baked goods.”
To members of the Second Congregational Church, the yard sale is not just about fundraising. It is also about mission and recycling. The funds not only allow the church to open its doors to groups like AA, Girl Scouts, Senior Exercise, Free Supper, Christmastide Concerts and Children’s Theater, it provides the opportunity for families to purchase items at reduced prices and recycles “unwanted items to treasures.”
One favorite yard sale story is the man who loudly proclaimed, “Thanks to you, your wonderful stuff and your low prices, my kids will have a great Christmas!”
The rain-or-shine sale, now under 10 tents, will fill the entire church parking lot to overflowing.
The church is actively seeking community volunteers to assist with setup on Thursday morning, Aug. 21, and all day Friday, Aug. 22.
Davison said, “This year, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community. With so many treasures, we need community help with set up. We have a barn full of boxes to unpack and furniture to move to the tents. All ages are welcome. We would love to see a field hockey team or football team march into the parking lot.”
If you are interested in volunteering for a few hours and/or need many mandated community service hours, contact the church office at 743-2290.
There are no “early birds” or “previews” allowed before the sale, which runs from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. Coffee and doughnuts will be for sale for eager shoppers. Hot dogs and soda will be available later in the morning.
The revenue from the yard sale will be used to support the many missions of the church.
