PHIPPSBURG — A volunteer rescue worker injured his back after he reportedly fell off a cliff while attempting to rescue a dog Thursday afternoon at the end of Club Road in the Small Point area of Phippsburg.
A dispatcher said Phippsburg Fire Chief James Totman would not release any additional information about the incident, but WGME reported Thursday evening that a member of the Phippsburg Volunteer Rescue Team was injured after a rope broke while attempting to rescue a dog that had fallen off the cliff along a trail where it was walking with its owner.
A woman walking her dog along the cliff reported that it fell and became trapped on a ledge about halfway down the 40-foot incline.
A member of the rescue team used a rope to lower himself so he could reach the dog, but the rope broke, and the rescuer and dog fell about 12 feet, the woman who owns the animal told WGME.
The rescuer reportedly fell onto his back, landing on jagged rocks. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.
No information about his identity or condition was immediately available, but witnesses said he was talking.
The dog was not injured, its owner told WGME.
Club Road, off Route 216, leads to the private Small Point Club.
