Historical Society to take mill tour

WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society will meet as usual on the second Thursday of the month, Aug. 14, in South Waterford.

The meeting will be a little unusual in that it will be an open house at the Watson’s Mill from 6 to 7 p.m. The mill is in the center of South Waterford village, near Werner Park on what is today called Back Street.

The former cider mill and box mill has been the home of Robert Spencer and Geraldine O’Donnell for three decades but they have recently restored much of the building. The lower floor, next to what was once Watson’s Dam, still retains some original machinery.

Tours of the building, the last surviving mill along City Brook, where once more than a dozen mills stood, will be given until 7 p.m. Then from 7 to 8 p.m. the WHS will show a film about “The Mill at Freedom Falls,” another restored mill building. This will be shown nearby at the Bear Mt. Grange Hall, with potluck refreshments.
