Burnt Meadow DAR meets Aug. 16
AUBURN — On Saturday, Aug. 16, there will be a meeting of Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution at 10 a.m., at the High Street Congregational Church, 106 Pleasant St.
Lin Wright’s program is titled “‘A Goodly Heritage’: The Foundations of High Street Congregational Church and Its Revolutionary Roots.” She has been researching the early years of the church’s history. The burning question is, how closely were the early members and pastors linked to the Revolutionary War?
Burnt Meadow is inviting the members of the church and members of Mary Dillingham Chapter, DAR. There will be a short business meeting before the program.
Luncheon will follow on a choose-your-own, do-it-yourself basis. Lin and Vi will be dining at Denny’s a block away, and attendees are welcome to join them, or choose one of the many nearby options.

‘Natural Landscaping’ is program topic
MONMOUTH — On Monday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. Lew Alessio, lifetime gardener, will discuss “Natural Landscaping” at the meeting of the Monmouth Garden Club. The program is held on the lower level of Custom Hall and is sponsored by Cumstom Library. The public is invited.
Alessio will answer Henry D. Thoreau’s question, “Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprises?”
Lew will inquire, how hard are you working in your own garden? His presentation will ask us to reconsider how we measure gardening success, how “close to nature” are we getting when we garden so desperately and wonder if nature doesn’t have it right all along.
