It may or may not be true that Chief McCarron warned the citizens of Lewiston who were going to have crimes committed Wednesday afternoon to postpone them till Thursday as the police would be playing baseball with the City government that afternoon and must not be disturbed. At any rate they did play ball and walloped the City Pops to the tune of ten to three.
50 years ago, 1964
A labor dispute among bellhops and dining room workers disrupted service briefly at the Poland Spring hotels today. Executive Director Saul Feldman said breakfast for the 600 guests was 15 minutes late “but after that everything went smoothly.” He said that “we dismissed the help that didn’t want to work.” Later he said nine employes had left. Doorman Russell Freve quoted several bellhops as being dissatisfied with working conditions. A youth employed in the dining room complained that “we were switched around so much in our assignments for tables that many of us didn’t get a fair shake.”
25 years ago, 1989
Shop owners and retail developers are hoping the Maine Turnpike will be the big loser after a round of construction and retail expansion at the Auburn Mall area. “Leakage” is the term used in the retail business for local shoppers who get on the turnpike, drive to South Portland, pay the dollar toll and get off at the Maine Mall. And that leakage approaches nearly $42 million a year in sales, according to owners of the Auburn Mall. It is those sales that developers hope to recapture when an abundance of new retail space pops up alongside the Auburn Mall.
