FARMINGTON — The Board of Selectmen gave a Morrison Hill Road resident more time than he requested Tuesday to clear a partially burned trailer from his property.

Robin Hutchinson told the board his goal was to have it removed from his property by the end of September.

The board wanted to ensure he had enough time to remove the burned trailer and install a new one. They set a date of Oct. 14, giving him nine weeks to complete the work.

The town has received complaints about the trailer on Hutchinson’s property at 187 Morrison Hill Road, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

Hutchinson’s mother, Mary, lost her home in March when aluminum wiring caught the older trailer on fire.

In April, Code Enforcement Officer Steve Kaiser notified Hutchinson that he needed to remove the trailer and legally dispose of it. If he didn’t comply, the town would enforce it under state law.

At almost four months since the notification and with complaints about appearance and odor continuing, selectmen held a hearing Tuesday to determine whether structures on the property are dangerous or nuisances as defined by state law.

“I don’t have ample money, or I would have gotten it done in ample time,” Hutchinson told the board of his work to clear the burned trailer and install a new one for his mother. “I do have the tools and gumption to make it happen.”

Hutchinson told them it is a sore in his eyes as well as everyone else’s, and his mother has to look at the burned trailer, bringing back memories.

“People who have money don’t realize how hard it is for one man to do it all,” he said.

The board unanimously agreed for the town to enter a consent agreement with Hutchinson for removal by Oct. 14.
