LEWISTON — On May 18, The American Legion chose Jerry Dewitt, TCMHS Vista volunteer, as “Humanitarian of the Year” for his steadfast dedication to the ideals and principles of the American Legion and to the people he serves daily. Jerry formally accepted his award on June 14 at the 96th annual State Convention in Bangor.

As a Vista Volunteer at Tri-County Mental Health Services, Dewitt helps veterans and families apply for their benefits, refers them to counseling and partners with other community organizations around homelessness, substance abuse and mental health issues. Each year, he works diligently to produce “Bringing Worlds Together,” a conference held each September for veterans and family members.

Dewitt also represents TCMHS as a member of the Maine Military Community Network and Lewiston homeless committee LAASH.

Tri-County Mental Health Services is Maine’s most comprehensive agency dealing with the psychological and social well-being of children, adults and elders, serving about 10,000 individuals each year. The agency offers innovative programs and services addressing mental health, substance abuse, intellectual disabilities and more.

Despite its name, TCMHS reaches far beyond its traditional service area (Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford) with services in Cumberland and York Counties and beyond. For more information, visit www.tcmhs.org.
