1917 – 2014
AUBURN — Mildred “Millie” T. Madore died on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the age of 97, at Clover Manor in Auburn.
She was born on Aug. 5, 1917, in Caribou, the daughter of Oswald and Blanche LaFleche Thibodeau. She graduated from Caribou High School at the age of 16 and subsequently attended Colby College in Waterville in the Class of 1938.
She married John P. Madore Sr. on Nov. 7, l940, in Caribou. From the early 1940s until the early 1960s, she and her husband operated a potato farm in Van Buren and Cyr Plantation. In addition to handling the bookkeeping for the farm, Millie worked at various local businesses, including Van Buren Motors and the state of Maine, while raising five children. Millie, her husband and two youngest children moved to Lewiston in 1966.
Once in Lewiston, Millie worked in a number of departments at Bates College. She later worked at Geiger Brothers in Lewiston, until her retirement in 1979.
Millie was an avid reader all her life. The bigger the book, the more she enjoyed them. She especially liked a good conversation on a wide variety of subjects. She loved to eat — everything from lobster to pistachio ice cream, with most everything in between. She was asked recently if she could eat a new dish they were serving and she replied “I can if you put it down in front of me.” And of course, the Red Sox; Millie loved the Sox.
She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Frances and Stephen Kramer of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Jean and John Boeckeler of Hope; one son and his wife, Jeffrey and Paula Clark of Readfield; a daughter-in-law, Betty Madore, of Van Buren; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Sr., in 1999; and by two sons, Alan in 1971 and John Jr. in 2005.
Special thanks and appreciation to the staff at Clover Manor in Auburn, who did a wonderful job in making Millie feel welcome and cared for, especially Christine, Vicki and Deb, and the nurses, Kathy, Andrea, Erica and Brittany. And a very special thank-you to Margaret from Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for her care and compassion.
