History of area poor farms

PARIS — At the monthly meeting of the Paris Cape Historical Society, Jean Hankins will speak on the history of poor farms in Otisfield and other area towns. She will explain why they were started and why they ended.

Everyone is welcome to come and hear this history given by a knowledgeable person in many areas of local history. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the society’s museum at 77 High St. The meeting will start with a brief business meeting and conclude with refreshments.

There is parking in the driveway of the museum and in the large parking lot at the back of the museum.

The society had a very successful day at Founder’s Day in July, since the weather was ideal and many people turned out for the occasion. All the items on sale at Founder’s Day are also available to purchase in the museum, which is open every Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. The public is welcome to visit and do research if desired.

BUCKFIELD — Woodlands Mushroom Walk August 23rd, 9-11am

Join the Western Foothills Land Trust for a woodlands mushroom walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, on the Packard Trail, Virgil Parris Forest. The trail is a two-mile loop.

Meet at the trail head which is 1.2 miles south of Route 117 on the Sodom Road. Wear comfortable shoes and layers, and bring water.

The four-foot wide machined trail meanders gently through mixed deciduous woodlands along the western slope and shore of South Pond.

The rain date will be Aug. 29, 9 to 11 a.m. Call 739-2124 to confirm.

Historical Societies host authors

MINOT — Hebron and Minot Historical Societies join together to bring renowned Maine authors John Ford Sr. and Mark Nickerson to the area for an evening of “Blue Lights and Funny Cider” on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Ford is a retired Maine Game Warden and Nickerson is a retired Maine State Trooper. They will share anecdotes and hilarious stories from the past.

The event will be held at the West Minot Grange Hall (West Minot Village) at 7 p.m. It will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6. The public is invited. Supper attendees are asked to bring their favorite dish to share. The program is free with donations accepted.

DUV Tent 19 to meet Aug. 27

STONEHAM — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Community Room.

Those installed at the July meeting were Mary Jones, treasurer; Brenda Woods, secretary; and Loretta Andrews, guard.

Mary Jones reported on the convention which was held June 28 at the Hampton Inn in Waterville.

Chicken barbecue at Legion

LOCKE MILLS — A chicken barbecue will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the American Legion Hall, 593 Gore Road.

The meal will include a half-chicken with special homemade sauce or regular barbecue sauce, beans, potato salad, rolls, drinks and assorted desserts.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 under 12. Proceeds benefit the Legion and Greenwood Fire Department.
