1947 – 2014
TURNER — Anthony S. Vitale, 67, passed away on Monday, Aug. 18, at his home.
Born in New Castle, Pa., on May, 17, 1947, he was the son of the late Frank and Philomena Vitale. Tony grew up and attended school in New Castle. Upon graduation, Tony took a job with the railroad.
After working for the railroad for a short time, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Brunswick. It was while he was in Maine that he met and married Jane M. Wade of Lewiston.
In September 1973, Anthony joined the Lewiston Police Department. He proudly served the citizens of Lewiston as a patrolman, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and watch commander, until he retired in 1996.
In 1998, Tony decided retirement was not for him and returned to work, taking a position with the judicial branch at the 8th District Courthouse. He remained with the courts for the next 14 years and retired as a sergeant with the judicial branch of the state Marshal Service in 2012.
Tony was an avid football fan — particularly his beloved Pittsburg Steelers. He loved spending time with his daughters, grandchildren and friends.
Tony is survived by his daughters, Tracie Chicoine and her husband, Christopher Chicoine, of Falmouth and Kristen Vitale of Lewiston; grandchildren, Quinn Abigail, Christopher Connor and Cole Anthony Chicoine, Megan Jane Baillargeon and Macy Elizabeth Gravel; and his former wife, Jane Craig.
He was predeceased by a sister, Francine Vitale.
Tony will be fondly remembered as a proud and beloved father and grandfather, for his gentle brown eyes, mischievous grin and kindness, for never turning his back on a person in need and for his desire to protect and serve the people of Maine.
His family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to his many friends for their friendship, kindness, love and support of him throughout the years.
