DEAR SUN SPOTS: Once again I turn to your for some information.

We are looking for an 8-mm projector so we can see if any of our films are worth transferring to DVDs.

Maybe someone has one in their attic or junkroom they no longer have use for. We would be willing to pay a reasonable fee.

Thank you in advance and for your great column. — Louise Richard, Rumford, 207-364-3900

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the Aug. 18 question about the history of of local harness racing, C. G. could try Steve Thompson’s site “lost trotting parks of Maine,” also “save Maine harness racing.”

Another useful contact would be Donald Richards who trains at Cumberland Fairgrounds and has for 60 years, he knows just about everything that’s transpired in the business and likes to share the knowledge. His telephone number is 207-846-4609. Enjoy your column. Thanks. — Gordon Corey, Cumberland

ANSWER: Sun Spots searched for the text Gordon suggested and found the Lost Trotting Parks Heritage Center, losttrottingparks.com. The site is still under construction, which may explain why it didn’t show up when Sun Spots searched before. Or it may be because she was searching for “harness” not “trotting.”

At any rate, the site shows lots of promise, with many beautiful photos and stories of the glory days of horses gone by.

For more information or questions contact Stephen D. Thompson, creative director, at [email protected], or write P.O. Box 263, Hallowell, ME 04347. The center is a registered nonprofit and is accepting donations.

As for “save Maine harness racing,” Sun Spots guesses that Gordon is referring to a public action committee, the Committee to Save Maine Harness Racing, which has raised money to bring public attention to the plight of tracks and encourage “racinos” and other gambling at the remaining tracks.

As for C.G.’s interest in the topic, Sun Spots is pretty sure her letter was handwritten. However, she might find it worthwhile to visit the library and check out losttrottingparks.com.

DEAR SUN SPOTS I am so grateful that you published my letter with the request for window-washing services. You gave me two leads. The first one’s telephone is not in service, but the second one was just what I wanted and needed. Thank you for being of such help to me. — J.M., Turner

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the Aug. 11 letter from a grandfather looking for a piano teacher, my Nana, Norma Rice-Gould, has been the organist at the United Methodist Church of Auburn on Park Avenue for 60-plus years.

She has been teaching piano lessons for 25-plus years and is currently looking for more students. Her home phone number is 207-782-8376; she can also be reached at the church, 207-782-3972. Thank you. ??? — Kimberly Smith, [email protected]

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for the wonderful service you provide to the people of this area.

I recently returned from a trip to Kenya, where I visited a Masai community in need of a primary school. It is my intention to build that school.

If there are any folks here who have some experience with this type of undertaking in Kenya or East Africa, I would very much appreciate hearing about their experiences and especially about building schematics and materials and water situations.

Please call me anytime before 8 p.m. — Jeff, Turner, 207-713-9973
