A month after Sen. John Cleveland attempted to over-bill Poland taxpayers with a $12,725 bill on work that was estimated at $6,900, he finally agreed to bill us only for the originally agreed upon amount (Aug. 20).
I am disappointed Sen. Cleveland took over a month of public shame to revise his bill.
Sen. Cleveland also clearly violated his contract. He was supposed to complete his work by April’s town meeting, and he was to provide selectmen with monthly billing statements. Cleveland failed on both counts.
There are also questions about whether the work Cleveland submitted has been completed properly. Until the town auditor reviews his work, we won’t know for sure. I am glad the Poland Selectmen voted to defer payment until then.
Inflated bills, inadequate work, broken promises and requiring public shaming are signs that a politician needs a break and the people need a break from John Cleveland.
