Beekeepers to be at wildlife park

GRAY — The Cumberland County Beekeepers Association (CCBA), a local chapter of the Maine State Beekeeping Association (MSBA), will be at the Maine Wildlife Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, for a program on the industrious life of the honeybee, its job as an important pollinator of fruits and vegetables, and the role of the beekeeper.

Parts of a beehive, beekeeping equipment and a small observation hive will be on display, and several experienced beekeepers will be available to answer questions. Pure Maine honey and other products of the hive will be for sale. For more information, visit www.mainebeekeepers.com.

Native landscaping staff from Skillin’s Greenhouses in Cumberland will be on hand with a variety of potted native shrubs, trees and plants that are suitable for planting in yards and are great for providing bees and other wildlife food and shelter as well.

Fall series on roots to start

LEWISTON — A fall herb class series, “Roots of Health,” will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Ark, 791 Lisbon St.

The program will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Topics will include: Sept. 2, Roots for Preventing Lyme Disease; Sept. 9, Roots for Preventing Colds and Flu; Sept. 16, Roots for Detox; and Sept. 23, Roots for Nourishment.

Leeds student named to honor roll

WORCESTER, Mass. —  Worcester Academy announces that Cora Curtis of Leeds has been named to the final honor roll for the school year. The honor represents the achievements each student has earned through academic excellence, challenge and personal growth.

Firefighters raise funds for MDA

AUBURN ? Auburn Fire Department Local 797 held the second annual Pigs and Pints fundraiser at Legends Sports Bar and Grill to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Maine. The event raised $1,500 for families served by the MDA of Maine.

Auburn Firefighters of Local 797, International Association of Firefighters, continued their commitment to support MDA’s research programs and services to over 600 families in the state.

IAFF became the first national sponsor for MDA in 1954, and over the years, firefighters have raised millions of dollars to help improve and enhance the lives of those living with neuromuscular disease. Fire fighters have raised money for MDA through their participation in the annual Fill the Boot campaign, and 2014 marks the 60th anniversary.
