Maine Cycling Club changes time

LEWISTON — The Maine Cycling Club’s Thursday night free beginner ride that leaves from the Bates College track will change from 6 p.m. to 5:30 starting Sept. 4.

Everyone is welcome to go on the six to eight mile ride. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All types of bikes are accepted. A helmet must be worn.

The final Thursday night beginner ride will be held Sept. 18.

Cotterly chosen to lead District of Elks – USA

NEW ORLEANS — Wayne D. Cotterly of Poland Spring was installed district deputy to the Elks national president for the lodges in the Central District of the Maine Elks Association as members of the Elks-USA from across the nation gathered in New Orleans in July.

Cotterly was installed at the order’s 150th national convention. He will serve a one-year term.

More than 10,700 members belong to 22 Elks lodges in Maine. Nationally, in 2012–2013, the Elks gave more than $400 million in cash, in-kind donations and volunteer service.

Bridge club announces winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club winners at the Lewiston Armory on Aug. 25 were as follows: 1st, Claire Lyons and Les Buzzell; 2nd, Dick Allen and Richard Balian; 3rd, Mary Trafton and Luke Merry; 1st in B, Cynthia and Bill Clifford.

Winners of the North American Pairs qualifying game were: 1st, Nancy Lindgren and David Lock; 2nd, Paul Clement and Mike True; 3rd, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; 4th/5th tie, Jeanine Kivus andLeslie Lord with Della Starbird and Roger Labbe; 1st in C, Georgette Jewell and Patricia Soule; 2nd, Norma and Rick Verrill.

Games are played at 9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday in the Seniors’ Room at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave. A partner is guaranteed and all bridge players are welcome. Call Rosemarie Goodwin at 754-1431 for more information.

Local fourth-graders plant trees

LEWISTON — Maine’s Arbor Week was celebrated in May when fourth-grade students in Androscoggin County got to work in the dirt to plant a tree. Community Credit Union purchased trees and visited schools in the area, giving students the trees to plant.

The project is part of the Fourth-Grade Foresters Project, where the goal is to help revitalize the idea of Arbor Day in America’s schools. A total of 320 trees were delivered.

The following schools participated: Leeds Central School, Greene Central School, Washburn Elementary School, Auburn, Carrie Ricker Elementary School, Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales, and Turner Elementary School.
