Spick and span and with plenty of courteous clerks to wait on the customers, the Cortell Markson furnishers of men’s and women’s ready made garments will throw open the doors of the attractive new store on Lisbon street, Lewiston, to Lewiston and Auburn patrons Saturday morning. The handsome sign in the front of the store has 135 10 Watt lights and will throw illumination enough onto Lisbon street to light it as brightly as at noon time. The interior is also well lighted and its decorations are neat and up-to-date. E. S. Cortell of Portland is the manager and direct from the flourishing house there will bring to Lewiston all the advantages of a larger city store.

That hapless alligator living in the depths of Taylor Pond in Auburn came close to becoming a pocketbook or a pair of shoes today. Mrs. Franklin Tapley notified police this morning that the reptile was near the wharf at Simpson’s Beach. Authorities contacted Game Warden Dennis Wheaton and were told to shoot the creature. By the time officers arrived, however, the alligator had returned to the water and had disappeared. He’ll undoubtedly be spotted again this weekend as a number of boating events are scheduled at the pond.

John Coburn of Lake Street told selectmen Tuesday night the low water level on Sabattus Lake is hurting fishing, winter activities and duck hunting. The water level is lowered each fall to cut down on algae growth. Coburn suggested that the water level be raised after the draw down. The draw down of Sabattus Lake will be starting Friday, in compliance with the Department of Environmental Protection.
