LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine will offer the following new programming for the coming fall season.

Mondays

Dog training classes: Certified Dog Trainer Martin Neely returns Monday evenings beginning Sept. 8 for six one-hour classes. Two classes are being offered: 6 p.m. for puppies or beginner dogs who have never had training and 7 p.m. for intermediate or advanced dogs. Fee is $100 per session. Basic obedience and problem behaviors will be addressed.

Tuesdays

Art classes for children: Join the YWCA’s Art Camp Director, Ms. Jocelyn, and take a journey through the arts. An artist practically from birth, Ms. Jocelyn dabbles in every area of art. She has a true love of arts and crafts, and is excited to share them.

The younger class will focus on creating art using the obscure. Young artists will use paints, and create drawings and sculptures using uncommon tools.

The older artists will spend two weeks on drawing, two weeks on painting and two weeks on sculpting, where they will be introduced to the less common genres from each area.

Classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and are six weeks in length. Classes for ages 5-8 will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Ages 9 and above will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Fee is $50 for members, $60 for nonmembers.

Choose to Lose: The YWCA and Aspire Fitness offer this eight-week weight loss course designed for individuals of any age who are looking to lose upwards of 15 pounds. The course consists of a 30-minute educational session followed by an hour long fitness class.

The fitness class is progressive and adaptable to any fitness level. The educational sessions will include topics on nutrition, behavior change and fitness principles. Participants will be encouraged to keep food journals for the duration of the class. All participants will receive a complimentary four-week swimming pass.

Class will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 through Nov. 4. Fee is $100.

Wednesdays and Friday mornings

Vinyasa Flow Yoga: Join yoga instructor Shannon Dow for vinyasa flow yoga, a discipline derived from hatha yoga offering diversity in sequencing of asanas (poses) synchronized with techniques that will guide you towards flexibility, strength, balance, clarity of mind and provide restorative relaxation. This class is beginner friendly and offers a slower pace for purpose of introduction to the basics of yoga.

Class will be offered Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 through Dec. 17; Friday mornings from 7 to 8 a.m. beginning Sept. 19.

Fee is $10 drop-in or $80 for a 10-class pass. The first class is free.

Saturday mornings

Little Sparks toddler karate and children’s karate: Join Phoenix Academy for this six-week toddler karate and children’s karate class. All classes begin Saturday, Sept. 6.

In toddler karate, for ages 2-4, students will work on balance, tumbling and basic karate blocks, as well as stranger danger self-defense. Participants may choose from Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 9 a.m. or from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Member fee, $50; nonmembers, $60. Uniforms are $15 extra.

The children’s karate (ages 5-12) curriculum focuses on providing tools for the child to grow into a strong role model. Children are taught that karate starts and ends in self-defense and it should never be used to harm others. They are also taught the importance of leading by example, building their self-confidence and the self-confidence of others.

Class will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday mornings Fee is $90 for members, $100 for nonmembers. Uniforms are $15.

This program includes a weekly class at the dojo in Auburn in addition to the Saturday class.
