1924 – 2014
POLAND — Edward C. Sands, 89, of Maple Lane in Poland, died Monday, Sept. 8, at his home, with his loving family at his side.
He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 13, 1924, a son of the late James and Dorothy (Hodgkins) Sands. He was educated in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1943.
Edward went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning from the war, he attended the Auburn Maine School of Commerce, from which he received his associate degree. He worked for Western Union as a communication clerk and then worked at Brunswick Naval Air Station as a civilian.
Edward was a very active member of Court Street Baptist Church for several years. He also was a member of the Mayflower Society, Masonic lodge, Shriners and the American Legion, and volunteered as a Big Brother. He was an avid reader and enjoyed music, dancing and painting, and playing Scrabble and the piano.
Edward is survived by a sister, Constance Mazzone, of Lewiston; and several nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Denis and Ruth Wardwell; and a brother, Donald Sands.
