FARMINGTON — The Farmington Downtown Association held a big welcome Tuesday at The Homestead Bakery on Broadway for all new students at the University of Maine at Farmington.
There were games, music and food served as several businesspeople greeted the students and joined in a welcoming scavenger hunt of bingo.
All transfer and freshmen students were invited to attend.
This is the second year for the event, Sue Jones, association president, said. The number of students attending was nearly double last year, she said.
UMF President Kathryn Foster joined the festivities and planned to speak briefly to the group.
“My message tonight is going out to the businesspeople of Farmington,” she said. “It’s one of gratitude and thanks. We’ve had a long, wonderful relationship with the town that makes the UMF experience even better for the students.”
The UMF Clefnotes, an a cappella group, performed as the UMF beaver mascot, Chompers, danced and welcomed students. Debbra Parent and Zack Lavoie led the group. Lavoie swung his arm to the beat of “Stand By Me.”
