ST. GEORGE — The process and the results of a gravestone preservation workshop will be the feature of the fall conference of the Maine Old Cemetery Association on Saturday, Sept. 27. The third and final meeting for 2014 will be held at the St. George Grange at 32 Wiley’s Corner Road, off Route 131. All MOCA members are encouraged to attend, and the session is also open to interested members of the public and prospective members.

Founded in 1968, the Maine Old Cemetery Association is the primary organization in the state dedicated to locating old cemeteries, and encouraging their care and preservation, as well as gathering and preserving historical information regarding these and all cemeteries.

Registration for the meeting is scheduled from 8:30 to 9 a.m.; coffee and snacks will be provided by the Grange. Registration is $3 per person at the door. Throughout the morning, exhibits and displays of cemetery-projects and preservation processes will be on display. Participants are welcome to bring displays of similar works.

President Cheryl Willis Patten will provide welcoming remarks and introduce Jim Skoglund who will present “This is St. George,” an overview of the community and its history.

The main speaker, Donna-Mae Bean of Gravestone Concerns, LLC of Sidney, will offer an overview of preservation workshops and discuss the St. George workshop held May 30 to June 2 at the Old North Parish Cemetery. Following a 10:30 MOCA business meeting, Patten will present a visual overview of the five larger cemeteries in St. George. Some of the cemetery caretakers will be available for questions.

Reservations are required prior to Sept. 17 for lunch provided by the St. George Grange. Cost is $7 per person, payable at the door. Contact Jessica Couture by email [email protected] (preferred) or by phone at 877-7675. Lunch will consist of baked beans, casseroles and salads.

The afternoon will be dedicated to cemetery visits to the New and Old North Parish Cemeteries and Seaside Cemetery. Door prize drawing at 2 p.m. will conclude the day; must be present to win.
