DEAR SUN SPOTS: There remains a critical need for volunteer literacy tutors in Androscoggin County. We have many people with a wide range of academic needs and goals waiting for tutors.

If you are 21 or older, have a 12th-grade or higher reading level, are patient, creative and well-organized, you could be a Literacy Volunteers tutor.

The minimum commitment is to meet one-on-one with an adult student for an hour per week for a period of one year. The reward for helping people transform their lives is priceless.

Our next tutor training workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3 at the Auburn Public Library. Registration is required by Sept. 26.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What an honor to have been on the inaugural Flight of Honor Flight from Maine on Aug. 25-27 to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. We were treated royally.

I’m sure each and every one of us would tip our WWII Veterans caps to Bedard Pharmacy for loaning 27 wheelchairs for us to be transported in comfort. We salute you!

Funds are needed to honor more WWII vets, who not allowed to spend a penny for this honor. Time is running out. Hundreds of WWII vets die every day.

Please send donations to Jeannie Conway, 75 East Main St., Vinalhaven, ME 04863. I would like to see lots of others so graciously honored. — Irving Grant Auburn

DEAR SUN SPOTS: As usual I turn to Sun Spots to get the word out about our Veterans Memorial Park by the Great Falls in Lewiston. You always have been a great supporter of our veterans and their causes. The L/A Veterans Council appreciates all you have done for us.

Summer is just about over and most everyone is catching up on things they wanted to do and didn’t. One of these is having one’s family member or friend’s name inscribed on the next monument (No. 27) to be installed at the Veterans Memorial Park next Memorial Day weekend.

We have the A (front) side complete with 108 names already. We are taking applications for the B side, which is identical to the A side. We plan to unveil this new monument on the Saturday before Memorial Day next year.

The only requirement is that the nominee is or was a veteran with an honorable discharge. He or she can be a deceased veteran, active duty, retired of any branch of the services, including Merchant Marines and National Guard in any war or conflict or in peacetime. A copy of their DD214 or honorable discharge is required.

We have more than 5,500 names already inscribed on our 26 existing monuments. Among those we have three Medal of Honor recipients.

It would be a good time to get your applications in before the holidays. If you have any questions, call or email me. — Normand Cote, vice chairman, Lewiston, 207-782-1725, nmcote@roadrunner.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you ever so much for the service you provide for the people of our community.

We are trying to reach Lewiston High School alumni who graduated in 1945. We are planning a reunion that would take place in the summer of 2015.

We would appreciate any information about any of these alumni, living or deceased. Any information about possible relocation of these alumni would also be helpful.

At the time of the 65th reunion there was significant interest from the alumni who attended to plan for our 71th reunion. All information will be gratefully appreciated. — Normand Demers, mdemers204@aol.com, 207-782-6468
