1953 – 2014
AUBURN — The lives of many were deeply saddened on Thursday, Sept. 11, when the life of Forrest Gregory Davis, 61, came to a sudden and unexpected end.
Known by most as Greg and to those who knew and loved him well as Greebus, he was a generous, gentle man who doted on his pets, was quick to laugh, slow to anger and had a knack for making those in his company smile.
Born in Lewiston on April 16, 1953, the son of Forrest H. and Janet C. McKenney Davis, Greg attended Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1971.
After working for a few years at Bon Anne footwear in Auburn, he followed in his dad’s footsteps and joined the U.S. Postal Service. He worked in Unity and Waterville for several years, before finding his way back to the Auburn post office, where he worked until the exact moment he could retire in May 2008.
Greg was a robust supporter of the Second Amendment and an avid hunter throughout most of his life. He also loved to fly-fish and could often be found with his buddies on the grand lakes and tiny trout ponds of Maine. He particularly looked forward to fishing for stripers on the Kennebec River each spring. Rarely keeping what he caught, Greebs preferred releasing his quarry to swim again and be enjoyed by the next angler. Spending time in nature was a favorite thing, though Greg preferred seeing it from a motorized vehicle, enjoying many snowmobile and ATV trips with his friends over the years.
Forever a Red Sox fan, he had mixed emotions about watching their games because he felt as though he jinxed them as soon as he tuned in. He was a staunch Patriots fan and rarely missed watching a Bruins game. Sadly, the B’s have lost one of their most rabid fans.
Greg is survived by his sister, Arlene Flynn and her husband, Tom Flynn, of Auburn; their two daughters, his nieces, Katie Bartle and her husband, Brad, and daughters, Hanna and Grace, of Dunwoody, Ga., and Erin Flynn-Rice and her husband, Shawn Rice, and their daughter, Acadia, of Auburn; along with many, many friends who have shared the joy of considering Greebs to have been their best friend in the world.
He was predeceased by his mom and dad.
