JAY — On Friday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m., the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3335, its Ladies and Men’s Auxiliaries will hold a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action National Recognition Day Ceremony at the POW/MIA Remembrance Bridge Monument of all Wars located on Riley Road off Route 4.
The United Bikers of Maine will start their 18-mile run at the Turner Mall and head north on Route 4, continuing to the Livermore Falls Bridge where they will be escorted by the Livermore Falls Police Department up Main Street and join the Jay Police Department en route to the sound of the biker’s engines.
The bikers will travel north on Route 4 and take a left onto Riley Road and cross the POW/MIA Bridge and return to the POW/MIA Monument of all Wars by 6:30 p.m. This 18-mile run is done in memory of all 18 POW/MIA from Maine during the Vietnam War.
This year marks the 100th year of the beginning of World War 1 and the 50th year of the beginning of the Vietnam War. A portion of the ceremony will be dedicated to those wars.
This year’s POW/MIA Program chairpersons, John and Gail Kerns-Dube, have a commitment out of state. VFW Commander Palmer Hebert and Quatermaster George Wyman will co-chair the program.
All veterans organizations are asked to bring their colors to be pre-posted.
The public is invited and asked to arrive early enough to observe the impact the United Bikers have with this solemn service.
A light lunch at the VFW Post 3335, 64 Jewell St. and the corner of Franklin Road, Route 133, will be held after the ceremony.
