AUBURN — The Androscoggin Historical Society will present nine programs during its 2014-15 season. Topics will include a flood that crippled Lewiston and Auburn, the roles women had in the Civil War and the story of Sen. Edmund Muskie’s early life and career.

Most of the programs will be presented at the Society’s headquarters, in the Androscoggin County Courthouse at the corner of Turner and Court streets. There will be a genealogy workshop at the Auburn Library and a tour of Lewiston’s historic Clough Cemetery. There is no admission charge; donations are accepted.

Sept. 23: Daniel Buck Soules will offer advice on the ins and outs of antiquing. His 40 years in the field have included being an independent appraiser on the PBS program, “Antiques Roadshow.” 7 p.m. at AHS headquarters.

Oct. 11: Retired Bates Professor Doug Hodgkin will lead a tour of the Clough Cemetery (also known as the Crowley Cemetery) at 1920 Lisbon Road in Lewiston. 2 p.m.

Oct. 28: Charles Plummer will talk about Gen. O.O. Howard, born in Leeds, who led Maine troops in Civil War battles and led postwar efforts to help former slaves. 7 p.m., AHS.

Nov. 18: Lew Alessio, an experienced home restorer, will discuss and show pictures of the work he’s done at his classic 18th-century Cape Cod house in Greene. 7 p.m., AHS.

Feb. 7: Genealogy workshop with Nancy Lecompte, who will talk about the use of DNA testing to answer genealogical questions, and Fr. Robert Parent, who will discuss Franco-American genealogy. 2 p.m. at Auburn Public Library.

Feb. 24: Lewiston’s James L. Witherell will discuss his new book about Sen. Muskie’s Rumford roots, Polish heritage and early career. 7 p.m., AHS.

March 24: Doug Hodgkin will talk about the chaos that resulted when a huge flood washed out several bridges including the two that linked Lewiston and Auburn. 7 p.m., AHS.

April 28: Retired teacher and college dean Barbara Randall will discuss the challenges that Maine women met by using their ingenuity and faith to help the war effort. 7 p.m., AHS.

May 26: Retirees John Ford, a former game warden, and Mark Nickerson, former state trooper, will talk about the way things used to be in law enforcement. This is the annual AHS dinner meeting. 6 p.m., United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave., Auburn.
