Andover—William E. “Bill” Swan, 84, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at his home on South Main Street in Andover.

He was born in Andover on May 15, 1930, the son of Eugene and Elizabeth (French) Swan. He attended Andover Schools. He joined the U.S. Marines and served during the Korean War.

In his earlier career as a heavy equipment operator he worked for the state of Maine highway tar crew, later working for Raymond Akers, Gerald Harrington, Dave Smith Logging and Steve Swasey Excavation. He formerly managed the Andover Water District for many years and had served as sexton at the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Bill was a 55-year member of the Napoleon Ouellette Post No. 24, American Legion and a member of the Andover Congregational Church, where he had served as a trustee. He was a well-liked member of the Mills Market Coffee Club. He enjoyed many outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, motorcycling, flying, and was a beekeeper. He was active in the Andover Historical Society and volunteered for the Andover Fire Department for many years. He was known for his innovative mechanical abilities. He was very proud of and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Bill was married in Andover on Sept. 27, 1958, to Beverly Akers, who survives of Andover. Other survivors include two daughters, Kaye Moren and husband, Dave, of Columbia, N.H., and Karen Swan of Andover and companion, Arthur Babineau; a brother, Roger Swan of Mexico; and three grandchildren, Erica Moren and her fiancé, Craig Aubut, of Berlin, N.H., Jeremy Moren of Columbia, N.H., and Carson McKay, U.S. Air Force of Germany.
