WEST PARIS — Bertha “Betty” E. Kerr, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Ledgeview Nursing Home in West Paris. She was formerly of Dixfield.

Born in West Paris on Oct. 4, 1922, she was a daughter of James and Nina (Shortridge) Emery. She was a graduate of Stephens High School and worked as a waitress in Massachusetts and California.

Betty was a member of the Grange, including in Haverhill, Mass., and Peru and Dixfield; the Rumford Senior Citizens and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed trips with the Senior Citizens group and its weekly lunches.

Betty was a beloved member of the community and her sons could not take her anywhere without running into someone she knew. Betty could win a person’s heart almost immediately and most of her friends were people she had known all of her life. Betty had a wonderful smile that could light up a room and she loved socializing. She also enjoyed watching the soap operas on television.

Betty was married in Rumford on Dec. 25, 1940, to James Kerr, who died in 1986.
