Degree Day at Danville Grange
AUBURN — Degree Day will be observed at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Danville Junction Grange 65.
A light luncheon for a small fee will be served between the second and third degrees. Any grange having candidates waiting to take their degrees is welcome to bring them on Sunday.

Ezra Stephens, ‘P. T. Barnum of Maine’
HEBRON — For its August program the Hebron Historical Society co-hosted with the Minot Historical Society two Maine authors, John Ford Sr. and Mark Nickerson, for their “Blue Lights and Funny Cider” presentation.
It featured colorful happenings during their careers as Maine game warden, sheriff and state trooper. The event was held at the West Minot Grange Hall and was preceded by a pot-luck supper. About 80 people attended.
At the Sept. 23 membership meeting the program will feature society director and local historian Ben Conant speaking on the history of Ezra Stephens of Woodstock, known in the mid to late 1800s as “The P. T. Barnum of Maine.”
The program will follow a short meeting beginning at 7 p.m. at the Hebron Town Office, 351 Paris Road. The public is invited.
Herb class: Roots for Nourishment
LEWISTON — A fall herb class on “Roots for Nourishment” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at The Ark, 791 Lisbon St.
As we enter fall and think of the winter ahead, it is time for some deeply nourishing herbs. Meet ashwaghanda, shatavari, Solomon’s seal root, licorice root, angelica sinensis root, licorice root and eleuthero root and yellow dock root. Also learn tasty new ways to enjoy food roots like beets, carrots, parsnips and turnips.

SABATTUS — Girl Scouts of Maine will host a parent information and registration meeting in the Sabattus and Wales area at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Sabattus Primary School.
Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different and fun ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best. Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

Bean, ham supper at Lisbon Methodist
LISBON — The Methodist Women will hold a home-baked bean and ham supper from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Lisbon United Methodist Church, School Street.
Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for ages 6 to 12 and free for 5 and under.
Apple cake bake-off Sept. 27
MONMOUTH — The third annual Monmouth AppleFest Apple Cake bake-off will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Monmouth Museum on on Main Street.
The entry fee is $2 per item.
All entries must be registered and dropped off at the museum by 9 a.m. on Sept. 27.
First prize is $25; second, $15; and third, $10.

Reception for Betsy Connor Bowen
WAYNE — A reception for Betsy Connor Bowen will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road. The event is sponsored by the Cary Memorial Library
Meet local author Bowen, who will introduce her new book, a biography of her father, “Croswell Bowen: A Writer’s Life, A Daughter’s Portrait.”
Croswell Bowen was a journalist who wrote about the 1929 Wall Street crash, the Great Depression, WWII, McCarthy, JFK and Vietnam, always with the “certainty that finding the right stories and telling them with the right words could create a better world.”
Betsy is the author of “Spring Bear,” and the editor of her father’s memoir, “Back From Tobruk.” She has worked as a community organizer, teacher, financial analyst, journalist and filmmaker. A reception featuring wine and light refreshments will follow the presentation.
