1925 – 2014
LEBANON, Conn. — Catherine (Scribner) Calef of Lebanon, Conn., passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born at Scribner’s Mill homestead in Harrison on Aug. 12, 1925. She graduated from Norway High School in Norway in 1944, and married her high school sweetheart, Glendon Calef, on Dec. 31, 1946.
Catherine was a loving mother of five children, first making a home in Norway, then moving to East Hartford, Conn., in 1957. Catherine and Glendon enjoyed spending time camping, as well as a shared interest in the local lapidary club. She was also an active member of the Methodist Church of East Hartford, including volunteering as a Sunday school teacher and Girl Scout leader.
In 1977, Catherine and Glendon moved to Dixfield. She took up quilting and became a highly-respected and accomplished quilter. She taught quilting classes in both Rumford and Bethel for many years. She was a member of quilting organizations, including Grammy’s Choice Quilters and Ladies of the Lake, a charter member of the Pine Tree Quilters Guild and director of Country Roads Quilters of Western Maine.
She worked at Log Cabin Craft Works in Dixfield for almost 25 years. Several of her outstanding accomplishments were making a centennial quilt for the Dixfield Historical Society and donating quilts to several national charitable organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House. She and her sisters created quilts for the Scribner’s Mill annual fundraiser. Catherine and her quilts were featured in many local papers and a national quilting magazine, as well as winning a first-place ribbon for a quilt at the Big E in Massachusetts.
Catherine enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, baking, gardening and traveling to Florida, Hawaii, Texas and Alaska.
Catherine is survived by her five children, Linda Calef Beauchemin, Craig Calef, Bruce Calef and his wife, Linda, Dana Calef and his wife, Lois, and Karen Calef and her husband, John Walker; as well as 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind three siblings, Phyllis Partridge, Bourdon Scribner and Daniel Scribner and wife, Roberta; and a brother-in-law, Gordon Reynolds; as well as numerous extended family members, caregivers and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Glendon Calef; a sister, Lucy Reynolds; and a son-in-law, Richard Beauchemin.
