LIVERMORE — Residents will be able to recycle more items and do it quicker beginning Tuesday at the Transfer Station.

People will no longer have to separate recyclables. Instead, items will be placed in a roll-off container as part of the new Zero-Sort recycling operation.

Among the new items that can be recycled are Nos. 1 through 7 plastics, Transfer Station Supervisor Juanita Jordan said. The station previously took only No. 2 plastics.

Plastic see-through egg cartons will also be recycled, she said.

Plastic shopping bags, facial tissues and paper towels will still go in the trash, as will needles secured in proper plastic containers and sealed. Cardboard tubes and boxes for towels and tissues can be recycled.

Plastic bags can be returned to the shopping center, she said.

Shredded paper can be put in a clear plastic bag or paper bag and then recycled.

Gerry Albert of Norway, who works for Oxford County Regional Recycling, removed several recycling bins Monday that were set alongside the station lot.

The town is a member of the quasi-municipal corporation.

Two large roll-off containers will be placed in the area where the recycling bins were, Jordan said.

“For 12 years, we have sorted everything in individual bins,” she said.

The two large containers are a temporary solution until the compactor goes into operation in the spring of 2015, she said.

“It is going to be an educational transition for everybody,” Jordan said. “We know it is going to take some time for people to get adjusted to it.”

Zero-Sort is expected to raise the town’s recycling rate.

Townspeople have done a wonderful job at recycling, she said.

“Without them, we wouldn’t have as good an operation as we do,” she said. “They really try. They come in and ask questions and they make the attempt to do it right.”

Jordan and Jim Bryant, a Transfer Station employee, have passed out information packets to inform people about what is acceptable and what is not under the new policy.

The station also accepts recycled vegetable oil, but no animal fat products, such as bacon grease. They do not accept used motor oil, but Jay will accept residents’ used motor oil at its Transfer Station, Jordan said.

“I just hope the residents find it easier to recycle, and that it streamlines the process,” Town Manager Carrie Castonguay said.

The town is seeking bids for a 12- by 40-foot cement pad reinforced with rebar, she said. Bids are due by 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, prior to the selectpersons meeting at the Town Office.

The pad will go underneath a new compactor which has been ordered.
