- Five Franklin County Sheriff’s Department deputies were recognized Thursday with the 2014 “Caring About Lives in Maine” award presented at the Blaine House in Augusta. The awards are presented annually by Commissioner Mary Mayhew of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for exceptional service to citizens in suicide prevention and education, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said. From left are deputies Sandy Burke, Colt Bernhardt, Detective Ken Charles and Cpl. Christopher Chase with an unidentified woman. Detective Steve Charles is not in the photo. They were recognized for handling an incident with a suicidal man with a loaded gun in July, Nichols said. “Through sound tactics and at great personal risk to themselves, the deputies were able to unarm the man and resolve the incident without harm to himself or the deputies,” Nichols said.
