FARMINGTON — Potential pet owners lined up Thursday outside the Franklin County Animal Shelter to take part in the shelter’s grand reopening adoption special.
A total of 72 cats, kittens, dogs and puppies were adopted during the first day of the two-day event, said Erin Miner, shelter volunteer/website coordinator.
There were seven cats and three dogs left by opening time Friday, she said.
The shelter closed Sept. 3 due to a canine parvovirus outbreak. It reopened Sept. 25.
The staff offered the reopening special, allowing all cats and kittens to be adopted without cost, and all dogs and puppies for $50 or less, she said.
“Lots of happy people went home with great new pets,” Miner said. “The shelter was packed all day.”
The Industry Road shelter is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the shelter will hold its first ‘Strut for Strays!’ Doggie 5k at Titcomb Mountain in West Farmington. The race for runners and walkers begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants don’t need a dog to take part in the race. All dogs in the race must be leashed.
The route will be mostly on the old railroad bed, but will include a short section on the road, according to the shelter website. For registration and more information, go to www.fcanimalshelter.org.
