RUMFORD — State Rep. Sheryl Briggs said Friday that she is looking for the names of veterans who were wounded or killed during World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War so they can be recognized at a Veterans Day ceremony.

Briggs said the ceremony is planned for Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Rumford American Legion Hall. Certificates of Recognition will be given to veterans and their families in honor of their service.

The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services is looking to award Certificates of Recognition to Purple Heart recipients, prisoners of war, family members of those who died during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and recipients of Gold, Silver or Bronze Star medals.

“We would also accept the families of those who received Gold, Silver or Bronze Stars,” she said.

“The state is always looking to recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of its veterans who were wounded, prisoners of war, missing in action, or killed in support of combat operations,” Briggs said. “We hope we have another quick turnaround of responses, as many of our World War II veterans are passing on. We want to recognize them as soon as possible.”

In order to receive their medals or Certificate of Recognition, veterans and their families are asked to complete a short application and include their DD-214 and their discharge documents.

Any veteran or family member of a veteran who wishes to receive a certificate at the ceremony should pick up an application at the Town Office or call Briggs at 364-5665.
