AUBURN — State police are looking for an Aroostook County man they said fled the scene of a traffic stop Monday night.

State Trooper Jason Wing pulled over a Ford Focus operated by Don Hanson at Mile 63 northbound of the Maine Turnpike, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

As Wing was interviewing one of the passengers outside the vehicle, Hanson drove off, McCausland said.

He said police chased the car and later found it near Hotel Road in Auburn. Troopers were told that Hanson had fled into the woods along Route 122, McCausland said.

He said Wing recovered what was believed to be bath salts thrown from the car during the chase.

Hanson, 33, of Westfield is wanted on charges of eluding a police officer and failing to stop. He is 6 feet tall and weighs 190 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

State police believed he was still in the Lewiston-Auburn area Tuesday and will try to go back to Aroostook County.

Anyone with information on Hanson’s whereabouts should call the public safety dispatch center in Gray at 657-3030 or 911.
